Northwest Community Policing Council Meeting May 19th

Good Morning and Good Afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am the City of Albuquerque Community Policing Liaison and my job is to help the 6 Albuquerque Community Policing Councils promote APD’s transition to Community Policing. For those of you who may be unaware, the Department of Justice came up with a decree in 2015 that the Albuquerque Police Department’s unnecessary use of force  demanded changes in the department, one of which being the establishment of the aforementioned Community Policing Councils;

The Community Policing Councils work closely with the Albuquerque Police Department to develop a comprehensive community policing approach that collaboratively identifies and implements strategies to address crime and safety issues.

Rather than simply responding to crimes once they have been committed, community policing concentrates on preventing crime and eliminating the atmosphere of fear it creates. Earning the trust of the community and making those individuals stakeholders in their own safety enables law enforcement to better understand both the needs of the community and the factors that contribute to crime.

A well–functioning police department has the trust of the residents it protects, functions as a part of the community rather than isolated from it, and cultivates legitimacy when the public views it as engaging with them fairly and respecting the rule of law. 

Officers should value civil rights, respect every member of their community, and see their work as an investment in the community.

I am sending this letter to you today in hopes that you will pass it on to members of your Association so that we can get more community involvement in our monthly webinars:  Our next NWCPC webinar will be held on May 19th, and these meetings contain information vital to the local community regarding the Police Department, crime, and issues caused by crime. Solid Waste Management Department Offers Spring Green Waste Pickup

Green Waste pickup is a free service offered to Solid Waste customers

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Starting Monday, May 3rd, the City of Albuquerque Solid Waste Management Department’s (SWMD) Spring green waste collection will begin and will run through Friday, May 14th. SWMD will pick up residential green waste at no additional charge.

“Our Spring green waste collection program is an incredible opportunity for Solid Waste customers to have their green waste collected free of charge.” stated Matthew Whelan, Director of Solid Waste Management Department. “A key benefit of this program is reuse. Currently, the green waste collected is mulched and used to help provide soil protection at the Cerro Colorado Landfill.”

Solid Waste customers should have their green waste at the curb by 7 a.m. on their regular trash collection day. All green waste must be placed 5 feet from trash and recycling containers as well as any large items scheduled for pick-up.

Solid Waste customers must place their green waste such as leaves, grass, and brush in trash bags. Each trash bag should not weigh more than 40 pounds. Customers that have branches must cut them to four-foot lengths and bundle them securely. Green waste should not be placed in your recycle cart.

The following items will not be picked up:

  • Dirt
  • Construction debris
  • Gravel
  • Construction material
  • Tree stumps

Absentee Voting for Special Congressional Election Begins Tuesday, May 4

The 2021 Special Congressional Election will be held Tuesday, June 1 and the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office will begin mailing absentee ballots out on Tuesday, May 4 and absentee voting begins that day, as well. Currier Way

John Currier

John Currier has been a resident of Seven Bar North since July 2000. He is also the longest serving volunteer for the HOA. John has held almost every role in the HOA since the developers turned the HOA over to the community during the winter of 2000. He served as a Board Member from 2005 through 2016, but his true passion is the landscaping. John established our Landscape and Maintenance Committee in 2001 and still serves as the team’s chair. He has also volunteered for the Compliance and Architectural Control teams.

In recognition of John’s dedication to the Seven Bar Community, the HOA is renaming our walking trails to ‘Currier Way’ and mounting signs signifying this where the trails cross La Sierrita and Seven Bar North. The timing seems appropriate since John and the Landscape Team (John and Dubra Karnes-Padilla) just finished managing the two-year project to refurbish all four sections of our trail system which look wonderful.
