Connect with the City Planning Department during a morning of learning and engagement! City Leaders is intended to inform the community about planning and the built environment in Albuquerque, create a more transparent planning process, and encourage community engagement in the growth and development of Albuquerque.
It’s officially fall, which means we’re in the prime season of green chile roasting, golden cottonwoods, and of course, Balloon Fiesta. This year, we’re celebrating the Fiesta’s 50th Anniversary. For 50 years, our city has grown this tradition and the community around it into what is is today: an event that has captured the imagination of millions and represents the heart of the community.
Here at the City, we’re in Fiesta mode and have been hard at work preparing for visitors from near and far. We’ve built a number of significant improvements that will help this year be a success and pave the way for the next 50 years of Fiesta. Those infrastructure improvements include more parking and the installation of a new slip ramp that will reduce traffic congestion and make exiting the park easier for drivers. Our Solid Waste Department and Parks and Recreation joined forces for last weekend’s Company’s Comin’ event, and we are so grateful for their hard work and that of the volunteers who joined them to tidy up the park and nearby neighborhoods.
The Balloon Fiesta is a testament to our community and an opportunity for us to celebrate the best of Albuquerque together. There is something so special about taking your children for the first time, bringing in your friends from out of town, or taking part in your own unique Fiesta traditions. This really is one of the best times of the year, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone out there.
Summer is winding down and we’re already in the swing of the school year! We hope everyone enjoyed the fun summer our city put on. I also encourage you to look into City programs that we offer all year-round, whether it’s before and after school programs or new volunteer opportunities, there are so many ways to get involved for folks of all ages. This is always an exciting time of year, but it’s also been difficult for our community in a lot of ways and we want to make sure people across our city feel safe in schools, in parks, and in places of prayer. We’re working everyday to do our part in building a safer city. Sometimes that requires hard decisions, like closing Coronado Park to address critical public safety concerns. We don’t have all the answers, but we do know that our city deserves better than the status quo and we’ll keep taking action needed to keep people safe.
Join us at our Virtual Town Hall on Friday to ask questions and hear from the leaders working to make our city the best it can be. We hope to hear from you and get your input as we continue working towards a safe, inclusive Albuquerque.
Mayor Tim Keller and City leadership will host a telephone town hall this Friday, August 26, 12:30 – 1:30 pm and everyone is invited to participate. To register and to get the Zoom webinar link, visit: https://www.cabq.gov/mayor/mayor-kellers-telephone-town-halls
The Animal Welfare Department needs your help. There are 800 pets in our city that need good homes, and our shelters are full. Animal Welfare is hosting an adoption clinic this weekend, Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28, at the Eastside and Westside shelters, and the Everyday Adoption Center located in the Eubank PetSmart. The adoption fee is waived for all pets. Each adoption will include spay or neuter, a microchip, required vaccinations, and one free initial vet visit. For dogs, you will receive one free dog training class. This is a great opportunity to bring home a new furry friend.
