The Animal Welfare Department is seeking donations of new or gently used dog houses to help pet owners who need assistance during the cold winter months. Medium to large-sized dog houses are needed most, and can be custom-built if you’re handy with hammer and nails.

You can drop off doghouse donations at the Eastside Shelter, 8920 Lomas NE or at the Westside Shelter, 11800 Sunset Gardens SW, any day between 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. For more information, contact Allen Hargis at: ahargis@cabq.gov

Animal Welfare Department Reminds Pet Owners To Remember The Leash!

Image

The Animal Welfare Department (AWD) would like to remind pet owners to remember the leash if you take your pet to City parks, trails, open spaces and anywhere within City limits. We love our furry friends here in Albuquerque and we encourage pet parents to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather with them!

AWD understands pet parents want the freedom of letting their pets roam, but as a reminder there are leash laws in Albuquerque for their safety and the safety of others. The City’s Municipal Code § 9-2-2-2 (A) states that “all animals are required to be on a leash. No animal shall be permitted in any street or public place within the city unless it is effectively restrained by a leash not to exceed 8 feet in length.” Violators could be fined for civil violations at $200 for the first offense, $300 for the second, and $500 for the third or subsequent offense or criminal charges can also be filed. There are several dog parks throughout Albuquerque where dogs can play off-leash. To see the map of dog parks, visit: https://www.cabq.gov/pets/news/dog-park-map

Operation Silent Night Seeks Donations to Help Shelter Pets This Holiday Season

Celebrate the season of giving by helping the Animal Welfare Department increase the comfort of homeless animals in city shelters. The wish list for cats and dogs includes small cat toys, treats, beds, brushes, wand toys, scratchers, blankets, towels, dog enrichment toys, collars, harnesses, pill pockets, and Kong toys. Please help them by fulfilling their wish list as they spend their holidays at Animal Welfare shelters while waiting to find forever homes.

Donations will be accepted through December 31. Members of the public can drop off their donations at the Animal Welfare Department shelters and at participating small businesses throughout the city. You can also support local animals as you shop for gifts for your human friends and family by selecting “Kennel Kompadres” as your charity of choice when you shop on Amazon at http://smile.amazon.com. A percentage of your purchases will go to Kennel Kompadres every time you order at no cost to you.
