“Coffee With A Cop” on Tuesday, September 10 Promotes Citywide Safety and Community Outreach

The public is cordially invited to join the officers of the Albuquerque Police Department for a large-scale “Coffee with a Cop” on Tuesday, September 10 at the University Substation, 1009 Bradbury SE, between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. There will be complimentary coffee and refreshments courtesy of Dunkin’ Donuts. This is a great opportunity to meet the officers, share concerns and ask questions, and enjoy that great cup of Dunkin’ Donuts joe! Alvarado Street Fair This Weekend

The public is invited to come downtown to the Alvarado Transportation Center, 100 1st St SW this Saturday, August 31 for a morning of music, vendors, education, nonprofits, local shops, entertainment, and food and drinks. From 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM, you can enjoy this free community event. Parking is free at the 1st and Gold parking structure. A QR code will be provided at the event to waive the parking fee. Solid Waste Management and Keep Albuquerque Beautiful Seek Volunteers for Fiesta Fanatics Event September 28th

The Solid Waste Management Department and Keep Albuquerque Beautiful, in partnership with Imagine ABQ, proudly present the Fiesta Fanatics Cleanup Event, a rebranding of its annual fall neighborhood cleanup, and are seeking volunteers for this event. As a Fiesta Fanatic, you’ll be among the first to kick off the festivities for this year’s Balloon Fiesta. Volunteer perks include:

  • Exclusive Fiesta Fanatics t-shirt for the first 300 registrants to sign in day of event
  • Free Balloon Fiesta session ticket for the first 300 registrants to sign in day of event
  • Free breakfast and lunch
  • Free Supplies for cleanup (trash bags, gloves, grabbers, and safety vests)

APD Hosting Safe Surrender Gun Buy Back Event This Saturday

The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) is hosting a Safe Surrender Gun Buyback event this Saturday, August 24, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., at the University Substation, 1009 Bradbury SE. Anonymity for individuals who sell their guns is assured, and sellers will receive free tickets to the Isotopes baseball game taking place that same afternoon. Buy-back prices for guns are as follow:

  • $250 for assault weapons
  • $200 for semi-automatic handguns and rifles
  • $100 for long guns and pistols
  • NO CASH EXCHANGES for 3D and ghost guns

This week, legislators from all across New Mexico will convene in Santa Fe for the special session. This is an important opportunity to address the various challenges our communities are facing, especially when it comes to public safety. As a former state Senator, I know that the constraints of our state Constitution and having only 60/30-day sessions leave little choice for urgent and important policymaking. I always support the ideas of a special session to have more time to address the big issues in our state. 

We look forward to working together with partners from all over the state to develop meaningful solutions that can enhance public safety and improve quality of life for all residents. We are also bolstering our own programs to fight crime and curb homelessness. Earlier this month, we joined the community to celebrate the opening of the ACS headquarters. This innovative public safety team has exceeded expectations since being established in 2021, and continues to improve response time and service. Additionally, APD recently completed a proactive transit safety operation along the Central corridor which resulted in 106 felony warrants cleared and 65 felony arrests. And last but not least, we’re investing in our front line workers. We signed a historic collective bargaining agreement with IAFF Local 244, and now all labor unions have these multi-year agreements.

Tonight, Wednesday, July 17, we will be hosting a telephone town hall where City leaders can answer your questions and will be discussing City projects and updates, from community center improvements to crime fighting efforts to summer resources for the whole family. Register for the town hall online.

We also invite you to save the date and join us in person on Saturday, August 17 at the ABQ BioPark Zoo for the annual State of the City address. State of the City is free and for all ages, so bring the whole family and enjoy an evening at our incredible zoo.
