Environment Department and City of Albuquerque to host second public engagement meeting for Clean Cars New Mexico
The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) and the City of Albuquerque will host their second virtual public engagement meeting in anticipation of coordinated rulemaking proceedings to adopt clean car rules in New Mexico. The public meeting is at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 15, 2021.

Clean car rules reduce emissions from the transportation sector by making more low-emission and zero-emission passenger vehicles available to consumers. Consumer Reports estimates that by 2025 auto manufacturers will produce about 100 electric vehicle models. Without clean car rules, many of these advanced technology vehicles will not be readily available in New Mexico as manufactures will preferentially deliver the zero-emission vehicles to states with clean car credits.
In their 2020 analysis, M.J. Bradley & Associates found that the electrification of light-duty vehicles could save the average utility customer $120 a year and provide 5 billion dollars of cumulative net benefits through driver savings, utility customer savings, and the social value of emission reductions by 2050. Additionally, the rules are expected to eliminate nearly 2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 – the same as taking 200,000 cars off the road for an entire year.
“Investing in innovative technology that addresses climate change is the way forward for a strong economy,” said Cabinet Secretary James Kenney. “By providing a pathway to more jobs, diversifying the transportation sector and reducing emissions, clean car rules make both our environment and our state economy more resilient to the effects of climate change.”
“Our program is committed to protecting public health and our environment,” said Mara Elana Burstein, City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Deputy Director. “Clean Car rules will help reduce local ground-level ozone pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.”
The second public meeting will provide more detailed information on how the clean car rules will work in New Mexico. The meeting also includes the opportunity for the public to ask questions and make statements.
Public engagement and participation are critical to the success of any regulatory agency, and both NMED and the City are committed to providing opportunities for New Mexicans to make their voices heard throughout this process.
